Most Congress leaders who attended the election committee meeting headed by PCC chief and deputy CM Sachin Pilot have raised demand to field only local candidates in Lok Sabha elections to ensure better results. The meeting also mulled on the criteria to deny Lok Sabha tickets to sitting MLAs.

It was the first meeting of election committee after Assembly elections. The meeting passed a proposal giving final authority to Congress chief Rahul Gandhi in selecting the candidates for 25 seats of Rajasthan. Chief minister Ashok Gehlot, Rajasthan incharge and AICC general secretary Avinash Pande and other members including ministers also attended the meeting.

“Congress is ready for Lok Sabha polls. We are fulfilling promises made in the manifesto and will achieve mission-25 (winning all seats). In the meeting we have passed a proposal giving decision making authority in choosing candidates to Rahul Gandhi. But, we will also give suggestions to him on the candidatures,” said Pilot. He added that Congress president is scheduled to visit Ajmer on February 14 to address a conference of the Seva Dal. The committee passed a similar proposal prior to Assembly elections held in December.

Sharing details of the meeting Pande said that panel discussed party strategy in wake of upcoming Lok Sabha election. All suggestions will be sent to the screening committee.

“After the screening committee meeting there will a meeting of CEC (Central Election Committee). There is another meeting in AICC on February 9 which will be attended by the CM. The party would take decision on the criteria of denying tickets to the sitting MLAs after taking ‘ground report’,” said Pande. He also accused the Opposition BJP of misleading people on government schemes for which the panel has workers who will give them befitting reply. The party will run a programme from February 15-25 in which trainers will tour the state and train workers on poll preparations.

Gehlot-Pilot Avoid Gurjar Quota Issue

Gehlot and Pilot were found avoiding a question on Gurjar Mahapanchyat which the community called on quota issue on February 8. Trying to shift the onus of granting 5% quota in state, Pilot said the Centre should remove the legal hurdles preventing it.
