This could have been a scene in Jaipur also, a few days back when farmers were heading to besiege Vidhan Sabha. But the Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and proactive administration averted this situation, which could have created chaos and haphazardness in the city.

Farmer agitation has become a countrywide phenomenon. And the demand is common - remunerative price for their produce and complete debt waiver. A couple of months back farmers agitation in Madhya Pradesh turned ugly when 5 peasants were killed in police firing. The M P government announced package of Rs 6000 crore.

Similarly farmers have been demonstrating in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Karnataka and Maharashtra also,

For the last one year, unrest among farmers is simmering across the state. Farmers, in last September, had sieged Sikar, 100 kms from Jaipur.

“But the chief minister Raje, with her political acumen and her foresightedness never let them take public at ransom in the state capital,” said a BJP leader.

Farmer agitation since then has been gathering steam but remained localised.

A few days back, farmer groups tried to do ‘gherao’ of Vidhan Sabha which could have disrupted lives in Jaipur. But the government averted this crisis by blocking their way outside the city and making arrests of farmers leaders. “The administrative skills of Raje helped the government save the situation. While in other states, government had resort to firing, here not they were being lathicharged even once,” said a senior police official

FARMER FORMULA

The state government has taken up the issue seriously. The chief minister has set up a inter ministerial committee to decide on the package of farmers. They had travelled to Karnataka to study the debt waiver scheme there . Raje has also announced debt waiver of Rs 50,000 encompassing all farmers irrespective of their land holding, which would benefit 30 lakh farmer incurring a cost of Rs 10,000 crore to the exchequer. This has silenced all agitating farmer groups and the opposition Congress which were going aggressive on this issue.
