Death of an elderly weaver Daulat Bano due to electrocution has triggered widespread protests by the residents of Prithviraj Nagar.

On Monday, hundreds of residents gathered near Hirapura Power House for a condolence meeting called by a local agitation committee. The incident has further added momentum for demand to relocate the overhead high tension voltage lines from the Prithviraj Nagar area.

“It is not the first case when the high tension lines at Prithviraj Nagar have caused human casualty. We have been demanding the authorities to shift these lines underground but our pleas continue to remain unheard,” claimed Ranveer Parashar, convener of a resident committee agitating against the overhead electricity lines.

The deceased woman Daulat Bano got electrocuted from a 132 KV line on October 16 while she was picking up a tree branch for fodder of animals. She was rushed to SMS Hospital where she died undergoing treatment on Sunday. News of her demise raised voices of protest by many local residents.

The agitation committee representatives claim that despite repeated memorandum and requests, the overhead wires continue to remain a threat for the lives of thousands of local residents. The issue has also been drawing political attention as Assembly elections are nearing.

“We are associating local residents with the cause and motivating them to raise it ahead of the political party candidates that come to seek their votes,” adds Parashar.

The issue of high tension voltage lines has emerged following unauthorised development in the area over past decades.  As these electricity lines loom danger on more than 10,000 lives, the authorities concerned have been unable to propose a plan for their relocation.

The task is expected to cost more than Rs200 crore and despite the residents offering to partially bear the cost, authorities have been unwilling to advance towards the task. Meanwhile, the proposal for upgradation of 132 KV line to 440 KV has further raised concern of the residents of the area. Consisting more than 800 colonies, Prithviraj Nagar is home of nearly one lakh people. These people have impact on two assembly constituencies of Sanganer and Jhotwara.
