The crushing defeat of ruling BJP in the recently held bypolls has created problems for the party not just in the House but also in party domain. Ever since the results were declared, speculation has been rife about which heads would roll and who would lead the party in the forthcoming assembly polls.

The party on Tuesday showed visible cracks and spoke in different voices. Especially, when it came to the question of whether there would be a leadership change and who would lead the party in the next polls.

While state party chief Ashok Parnami and PWD minister Yunus Khan claimed that the party would win the forthcoming polls under the leadership of chief minister Vasundhara Raje, home minister Gulab Chand Kataria and senior BJP MLA Narpat Singh Rajvi said such decision would be taken by the party high command.

Parnami told media that he has not been asked to tender his resignation. “Winning and losing are two faces of the same coin. We will win in the forthcoming assembly polls,” said Parnami. Responding to a query, he said: “The forthcoming assembly elections will be fought under the leadership of chief minister Vasundhara Raje.” When asked whether a report has been sought by national BJP president Amit Shah, Parnami gave a guarded reply by saying, “We review election results, irrespective of whether we win or lose.”

PWD minister Yunus Khan too claimed that BJP would form a government. “We have reviewed the reasons for the defeat and identified them,” said Khan. “They will be deliberated within the party,” he added.

Home minister Gulab Chand Kataria said that the party had made mistakes that led to the bypoll defeat. “We will correct the mistakes we have made.” Replying to the query about leadership, Kataria said: “The BJP does not have a system of fighting under someone’s leadership. We are a party where persons do not give orders, they are given by the party. The party high command will take a decision and all will function according to the responsibilities allocated,” said Kataria.

Similarly senior MLA Narpat Singh Rajvi too said: “The party high command will decide what will be done and how the elections will be fought. These decisions are not taken at localised levels.”

While the ruling party is trying to put up a brave front saying that the results have given them a wake up call for analysis, there is no refuting the fact that for BJP -  the party that won 2013 polls with brute majority - the path ahead is a difficult one.
