They were career rivals, one having had the opportunity to become a chief minister for the third time, the other having missed out on the opportunity once, by an incredulous 1 vote defeat in assembly polls.

On Monday, when chief minister Ashok Gehlot walked up to newly elected speaker Dr CP Joshi to congratulate him in his new role, he didn’t make light of the fact that his once political rival was no longer the adversary he used to be.

Gehlot made it a point to tell the House that Joshi was elected unanimously and that he is acceptable to all. In the same breath, he made it a point to remind Joshi to take care of his own party, which had returned to power in state, while dispensing with the issues tabled in the assembly.

Aap sabko sath lekar challenge… parantu, aap satta Paksh ka bhi dhyaan rakhenge (You take everyone along with you, but it is expected you shall take care of the ruling party inside the House).

Joshi who won for a fifth term in the assembly elections, was not given a place in Gehlot’s Cabinet.

There were murmurs of a fallout between the two leaders because he was conspicuous by his absence from the swearing-in ceremony of his colleagues, while former ministers like Bina Kak had made it a point to attend the event.
Since, then the talks of Joshi being elevated to the post of Vidhan Sabha Speaker have been going on.
