Pankaj Singh was busy sweating it out in the gym and not even in his stray thoughts did he think of an outside chance to play Duleep Trophy 2017 that is already underway. The unexpected call came on Wednesday afternoon from a BCCI official who apprised him of the development confirming his tickets to Kanpur for the match on September 19. It was a pleasant surprise for the pacer given he had done exceptionally well last year in the domestic circuit and deserved participation from the very outset of the tournament.

“I was dejected when initially I didn’t see my name in any of the Duleep Trophy teams despite the fact I did well last year in every domestic tournament that I played,” Pankaj Singh said. Given that he has got a chance now, he is looking forward to make the most of it. “I am ready to seize the opportunity with both hands and give my best to ensure the team wins and we enter the finals,” he added. The final of the tournament will be held on September 25 in Lucknow.

The development came after a few players were included in India A squad that will play against New Zealand A between September 23-30. Duleep Trophy is another platform which affords opportunity for selection in Team India.

Since 2014, when Pankaj made his international debut in Tests and represented the side on India’s tour to England playing two Tests, he has been curtly overlooked notwithstanding his standout performances. With new crop of players, it seems Team India has identified a set of players to build upon for the coming two years with Nathu Singh, Basil Thampi and Aniket Choudhary ‘as a part of the scheme’.  But such a scenario hasn’t disturbed the seamer.

“That is their planning and outlook. I will continue to work harder because nothing in sports is final. You never know when in what form an opportunity may come and knock your door,” he said.
