Former special secretary, RAW and Cabinet, Government of India, Tilak Devasher said Pakistan has been betrayed by its own leaders, who displayed a remarkable trait of flawed ingenuity. Leadership, he observed, has been a crucial problem in Pakistan. ‘Pakistani leaders did not focus on key socio, economic and political indices,” he told the packed audience at the Ashok Club.

Taking the example of the unceremonious exit of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, he said that Sharif has had the dubious distinction of not being able to complete each of the three terms he was the PM. “He was removed by the President, the army chief, and the judiciary having failed to get along with any of the army chiefs he appointed,” Devasher said.

He took up the case of Pervez Musharraf who had seized power in a bloodless coup to helm governance in the neighbouring country. “He should have been a footnote in Pakistan’s history. He occupied centre-stage because of the indecisiveness of Nawaz Sharif who let him continue with Kargil and did not hold him accountable for the misadventure at appropriate time,” Devasher said. During the discussion, Devasher focused on Pakistan’s leadership over the last seven decades. He gave a fresh insight into their lives, their times and their personalities and the reason why these leaders fell from power. He was speaking about his book ‘Pakistan: At the Helm’ at Ashok Club in conversation with head of department, Mass Communication, University of Rajasthan, Dr Rajan Mahan.  The event was supported by Mayo College Jaipur Alumni.

Talking about Jinnah, Devasher said that for a person who created Pakistan, the treatment meted out to him at the fag end of his life when he was ailing was disgraceful. He could not even get a functioning ambulance to take him from the Karachi airport to the Governor General’s Residence. He said Ayub Khan’s record as an army officer was dismal, while Yahya Khan a boisterous person, and a hard drinker, was thrust into a situation he was not competent to handle, either intellectually or by training leading to the dismemberment of the country.
