Chill is in the air, but the Rajasthan government is feeling the heat of protests in Chittorgarh, the home of Padmini (Padmavati). In a knee jerk reaction the archaeology department has covered the stone plaque that had the story of Padmini (Padmavati) inscribed on it. This came after threat from the Shri Rajput Karni Sena (SRKS) to smash it as it contained ‘incorrect history’. The protesters claim that the mirror story was incorrect. Also hundreds, including women, courted arrest on Monday demanding a ban on the film.
The mirrors at the Chittorgarh fort, that were supposedly used to show Padmini to Khilji, were vandalized and broken earlier this year allegedly by the SRKS. And curtains to the plaque is being seen as a precautionary measure. Sources in the department said that it was done on the orders of higher authorities.
Lokendra Singh Kalvi Patron of SRKS told DNA, “We welcome this move by the archaeology department. It was long due and validates our claims. The plaque showed distorted history. The mirror was invented 1294 in belgium and france that is 8000 miles from Chittorgarh. Khilji supposedly saw Padmini (Padmavati) in the mirror in 1302, just eight years later.”
“Khilji took three years to travel from Kandhar to Chittorgarh; a distance of 1100 miles. Even at the speed of a marching army the mirror should take 24 years to travel to Chittorgarh. I wonder how the mirror raced so fast to reach Chittorgarh,” Kalvi said.
As part of the ongoing protests by the Sarv Samaj Sangathan and Jauhar Samriti Sansthan, a total 304 persons including two dozen women on Monday courted arrest demanding a ban on the film. They were arrested under section 129 of CrPC. They were later released. The protesters were raising slogans against the film.
The protesters under the banner of Sarv Samaj have been staging a dharna at the gate of the fort for the last eighteen days. The police had made elaborate arrangements to maintain law and order.
According to Govind Singh of the Sarv Samaj Sangathan, “The protests would continue till the film is banned. We have also given a memorandum to the district administration to get the stone plaque removed.” Manju Shekhawat, one of the women who courted arrest said, “We will not let Bhansali distort the history of Padmini (Padmavati)”
