University of Rajasthan is taking several steps including tamper-proof envelopes to avoid paper leak before the commencement of final exams. This comes as a measure to avoid situations similar to last year’s examinations where University’s professors were caught revealing question papers to the students. “This year we are using envelops that are tamper-proof from inside as well as outside. These envelopes cannot be re-sealed. They can only be cut once. It is made out of plastic and the cover cannot stick again,” said prof RK Kothari, vice-chancellor, RU.

“Earlier the seal was a thin stickable seal, people had become expert in re-sticking it,” he added.

COST EFFECTIVE

This envelop is 20 per cent extra costly than the regular envelops. However, according to the V-C, this is cheaper as overall cost of the efforts put in to avoid paper leak can be controlled using it.

FLYING SQUAD

He further informed that an observer will be appointed as a part of the flying squad. “The observer will reach the venue 15 minutes before the examination. He will check the inventory to ensure nothing is tampered. The envelop will be cut in front of him, and, he will have to take a video of the same,” Kothari explained. He also said that the administration is empowering the flying squad this year.“The observers will be allotted three shifts. Apart from checking the inventory, they will take the rounds of the centres to ensure everything is fine,” Kothari said.

SENSITIVE CENTRES

University has identified certain areas as ‘hyper sensitively notorious areas’ which will have observers from day one.

“Areas like Sikar and Jhunjhunu are notorious centres. They do not have a good track record,” he said.

INEFFECTIVE CCTV

RK Kothari also said that the CCTV cameras serve limited purpose as they are only used to check whether the students are cheating or not.

“The envelops can be cut anywhere. Also, the CCTV footage is only visible to the principal, who may or may not be careful,” V-C Kothari said.

In addition to the envelopes, the university is taking several other measures as well. “We are sending only question papers for the examinations being conducted in the next three days, which, earlier were sent for the entire month,” the V-C said.

Other measures

In addition to the envelops, the university is taking several other measures as well. “We are sending only question papers for the examinations being conducted in the next three days, which, earlier were sent for the entire month,” the V-C said.
