Mohanty’s arrest was a challenge for cops; Court asked police to submit his properties list

Senior IAS officer BB Mohanty was sent on a two-day police custody by a city court on Tuesday. Accused in a rape case, the officer has been absconding since January 2014 and voluntarily surrendered before the police on Monday.
"His lawyer has been approaching the police for the past few days and finally he surrendered before ACP Sodala on Monday late evening after which he was produced in the court and had been sent to police custody," said DCP Jaipur (South) Yogesh Dhadhich.
Mohanty has yet not disclosed about details of his hideouts or explanation of rape charges levied against him. "We are going to interrogate on these issues. He has yet not said anything in this regard," said Nem Singh, ACP Sodala.
The police officers claim that Mohanty had decided to surrender due to police pressure and his property was under the threat of attachment. During the last hearing in the rape case, a city court had ordered the police to submit list of Mohanty's properties by next hearing scheduled for December 4 and surrendered just days ahead of the hearing.
His arrest had been a challenge for the police, his bail applications were rejected by the apex court and still his influence apparently helped him to stay free. The surrender is also being cited as failure of the police to arrest him before.
Declared absconder by court, former deputy inspector general of police Madhukar Tandon has been away from the police net for almost 20 years. Tandon has been absconding since February, 1998 after a subordinate staff's wife accused him of raping. Police had failed to produce a list of his properties in court in time following which most of the properties were disposed off by him.
