“Coming festive season, the Jaipur metro stations will be host to live performances of local artists. The Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation (JMRC) is offering performance space at its selected metro stations to local artist and institutions ‘without any cost’. The offer remains valid from October 10 to November 10 on first come first serve basis.

“All such artists, schools and other institutions willing to perform, music, drama, puppet show or similar activities can apply for performance at the stations of Ram Nagar, New Atish Market, and Mansarovar,” says a JMRC officer. The interested applicants will have to submit their proposal at least two days before the desired day of the performance.

The ‘art-friendly’ gesture is also the latest marketing innovation for the public transport service. JMRC, despite several attempts, has been unable to lease out its commercial properties at the selected stations and is expecting the art performance to draw additional footfalls for these.

“Promotion of our properties is an additional benefit,” admits an officer, even as he insists that the initiative will also help to associate more people with the transport facility.

The Jaipur metro advancing towards the commission of its phase 1 B, is faced with a challenge of dwindling passenger numbers. Three years past inauguration, the project lags behind its development schedule and remains far short from target passenger numbers. This is what has kept the fare revenue limited, the non-fare revenue generation through the lease of properties at the station has also suffered due to low traffic.

The metro has made several changes lately including relaxation in fare, increasing train frequency and provisioning of feeder services to draw more passengers. Meanwhile, it has also relaxed terms of the lease to make its properties more attractive to possible investors. Free lease to artists is the latest move in the direction.
