Nine hurt as Jodhpur building roof collapses

Nine workers were injured on Tuesday when the RCC roof of a building under construction collapsed in Chopasani Housing Board Area. It is being said that the commercial building was being constructed in the residential area without the permission of the Municipal Corporation. The roof collapsed before the RCC filling was done. Among the injured were mostly women workers, who were saved in the nick of the time as they had just moved out of the building before the roof caved in.

The police, district and corporation administration were jointly engaged in the relief and rescue operations.

The contractor had engaged 11 workers for the RCC filling but the wall made of bricks could not withstand the weight and suddenly collapsed. The wall and the RCC roof with sheets of iron fell on the workers. Three workers were injured as the the rubble fell on them while six others also sustained injuries. They were immediately rushed to Mathuradas Mathur Hospital. These include Narpat, Kalulal, Gopal, Rekha, Ganga, Devi , Bancha, Shanti and Sandyha.

On receiving the information, police, district, municipal administrative officers, Mayor Ghanshyam Ojha and other public representatives rushed to the spot. JCB and fire tenders also called in and with the help of JCB, the roof of RCC, sheets of iron and iron pieces were removed from the site. In the initial investigation, it is said that the owner of the plot had started construction without permission. Permission was not issued from the corporation. It is a residential area and commercial bulding was being constructed.

It has been said that two days ago the walls of bricks were erected and the work of RCC roofing was started on them. The walls could not bear the weight of the RCC and collapsed.

The municipal corporation has been accused of negligence as illegal construction was taking place and it did not stop it or took any action.

This is the third incident in the last fortnight. A building collapsed on Sardarpura B Road on Tuesday just about two weeks ago.
