Navjot Singh Sidhu, Raj Babbar to campaign for Congress candidates in Rajasthan assembly elections

The heavyweights at national level and hailing from neighbouring states have also been included in the list.

Gujarat Congress MLA Alpesh Thakor, a leader born of the OBC quota stir, Punjab minister Navjot Singh Sidhu and Manvendra Singh, former BJP MLA contesting elections against the chief minister Vasundhara Raje, are among the 40 star campaigners for the Congress party in the Rajasthan assembly election.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, ex-Prime minister Manmohan Singh along with AICC general secretary Ashok Gehlot and PCC chief Sachin Pilot have been retained as the star campaigners as well. The party has released its list of the campaigners who will be campaigning in the coming days in state for the elections scheduled on December 7. The heavyweights at national level and hailing from neighbouring states have also been included in the list.

Sidhu who is serving as a tourism minister in Punjab government and an entertainment wizard, the party believes, is a mob-catcher and can prove advantageous for its candidates contesting in Sri Ganganagar and Hanumangarh where sizeable population of Sikh community dwells. Punjab CM captain Amarinder Singh has been made a star campaigner taking into consideration the demographics of northern Rajasthan. Former Haryana CM Bhupendra Hooda will be also found campaigning for the party candidates in the belt dominated by Jat community.

Since the poll fever has gripped the state, the whispers were strong that Patidar quota stir leader Hardik Patel would be campaigning for Congress candidates, contesting particularly in Gurjar-dominated regions. In a surprising move Patel’s name does not figure in the list. Congress has given space to OBC quota stir leader and party MLA Alpesh Thakor in the campaigners panel, instead. Acharya Pramod Krishnam, who hails from Kalki Peethadishwer, will be seeking votes for Congress candidates in the state. His name figured in the list of campaigner released for neighbouring poll-bound Madhya Pradesh as well. Krishnam in the TV debates advocates soft Hindutva and is found to align with Congress ideology.

Congress general secretary CP Joshi, the campaign committee panel head, Raghu Sharma, and screening committee head Kumari Selja are also among the campaigners. Dr Chandrabhan, former PCC chief, who was denied ticket from Malpura constituency and Manvendra Singh, Congress candidate from Jhalarapatan against Raje and Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Raj Babbar are also on the list.

There were strong rumours that Patidar quota stir leader Hardik Patel would be campaigning for Congress candidates, in Gurjar-dominated regions.
