National Handloom Day: Smriti Irani may visit Jaipur

Textile minister Smriti Irani is expected to attend the National Handloom Day ceremony to be held at Jaipur on August 7. This is the fourth edition of the national level event this year. 

“It is a matter of pride that the textile ministry of India has selected Jaipur for holding the national level event, however, the list of dignitaries to grace the occasion is yet to be finalised,” said an officer at the Rajasthan Industries department. 

The day was instituted in 2015 by the Union government to highlight the contribution of handloom weavers of India. Since the national level event is being held in separate states each year. Previously the national level events have been held in Chennai, Varanasi and Guwhati. 

At the event exemplary handloom weavers from across the country will be awarded for the contribution towards the industry. The state level awards for weavers from Rajasthan will also be presented at the ceremony. 
The state industries department has announced list of the winners of state level awards, weaver Zakir Hussain of Kota has been been selected for the first prize for developing new designs.

Celebrating weaving

The National Handloom Day is being observed every year on 7 August to honour the handloom weavers in the country and also carter an impetus to India’s handloom industry. This year it is the fourth edition of the National Handloom Day after it was instituted in 2015. 
The celebration of the day seeks to highlight the contribution of handloom to the socioeconomic development of the country to increase income of weavers and also enhance their pride.
