After the farmers’ agitation, the Congress has shifted gear. It is now riveting on the illegal sand mining issue to take on the Vasundhara Raje government in the state. Going on with its two-week long agitation, the Congress on Thursday protested in front of the assembly demanding an end to the black marketing of sand mines.

Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee chief Sachin Pilot and senior party leaders joined the protest and told the workers to fight for the cause.  The Congress leaders further told the workers that their agitation will continue till the government acts on illegal marketing and provides sand for construction activities. The dearth of sand has made lakhs of workers unemployed and brought construction activity to a grinding halt.

“The BJP government has given protection to illegal sand mining mafia and a shortage of sand has put a stop to house construction by the people. The government has turned blind to the issue. A MLA from the ruling party, who raised the sand mining issue in the house, was snubbed by the ruling party. This shows that the government is not interested in resolving the issue,” said Pilot.

For over a week, Congress leaders have been on protest mode accusing the government of allowing illegal sand mining which shot up drastically after a ban on mining by the Supreme Court.  This resulted in a slowdown in the real estate industry and one lakh of workers were unemployed. As a protest, the workers also fried pakoda at several junctions in the city.

“The Raje government has insulted the mandate given to it in the assembly election, and its outcome was reflected when the saffron party was defeated in the three by-elections.,” added Pilot. RPCC vice-president Archana Sharma, AICC secretary Vivek Bansal and party whip Govind Singh Dotasara also took on the Raje government.
