Memorial to martyr unveiled, kin await relief

A large number of local residents were present at the unveiling ceremony of the memorial, built at the home town of Sepoy Dharma Ram, with the help of local residents. The martyr’s family was also present on the occasion.

A war memorial to  Sepoy Dharma Ram, Shaurya Chakra (posthumous) was unveiled at the Taratara village of Barmer district. Sepoy Dharma Ram of 1 Rashtriya Rifles, had laid down his life while fighting terrorists in Kulgam district of Jammu & Kashmir on May 25, 2015. He was hit by 25 bullets. Dharma Ram had been awarded Shaurya Chakra posthumously in 2016.

A large number of local residents were present at the unveiling ceremony of the memorial, built at the home town of Sepoy Dharma Ram, with the help of local residents. The martyr’s family was also present on the occasion. 

Addressing the public, General Bipin Rawat the Army Chief expressed gratitude to the local people gathered on the occasion and said that the Army would soon hold a recruitment rally in the area. “The youth of Barmer have exhibited extreme bravery and valour in the Army. We hope that more brave youth from the area join the Army to make it stronger.” 

Praising the martyr, the Army Chief said that Dharma Ram had taken part in many operations against terrorists. He laid down his life in Kulgam after neutralising the district commander of Lashkar. He assured that the family of Dharma Ram has been given all facilities. His children would be given  good education and his little child would get admission in military school. 

The martyr’s family however was of a different view. His wife Timo Devi alleged that they had received assurances, not assistance. They are still facing a problem of basic facilities, she said. Timo Devi said she is well educated and needs a job to support her family. Dharma Ram is survived by his 75-year-old mother, wife Timo Devi and two children.  

Also present on the occasion were , Chief of the Army Staff, Lieutenant General Dewan Rabindranath Soni, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Command and Lieutenant General RK Jagga, General Officer Commanding, Konark Corps. 

The event was attended by a large number of local residents. Local parliamentarian Col Sonaram was also present.
