A more than 100-year-old prison in Pratapgarh district of Rajasthan, which was once infamous for notoriety, has undergone a drastic image makeover in the last one year and is setting up a new example for the entire state. The image of this prison has completely altered, thanks to the efforts of Jail Superintendent (SP) Paras Jangid.

The acts like criminals making calls for ransom to the businessmen from inside the jail, fighting among criminals and recovering of mobile phones among other things made for a regular news. But the day the jail SP took charge, he resolved to overhaul the place by interacting with the criminals in an effort to know about their likings and dislikings and making the staff aware of the same. Soon after, activities like prayer recitation, meditation, sports, magic show,s literacy classes and movie screening started on a regular basis and the criminals also were made a part of various festivities.

Jangid’s therapy worked wonders. As a result, no crimes have been committed in the Pratapgarh jail from the last one year and he was also honoured on various platforms for his successful innovations that have put a halt on crimes. Jangid said that he is serving from past 12 years and had been posted at several places including Sojat City, Khetri, Beawar and Nagaur.

Jangid added that he got the inspiration of bringing this change in the jail from Jail DG Bhupendra Singh and IG Rupinder Singh. Seeing the change in the behaviour of criminals in the Pratapgarh District Jail, the government is now setting up a study centre of Indira Gandhi Open University. The university will allow the criminals to continue their studies in the jail as well.

The initiative of Jangid is also getting support from the district administration.
