Public announcement, fogging drive and house-to-house survey continued in the six wards of Shastri Nagar area of Jaipur as the health department takes on to battle Zika virus outbreak in this part of Jaipur. The department had 179 teams deployed at the wards 9,23,24,79,81 and 82 to survey 6,699 houses to identify possible suspects of the disease.

“During the house-to-house survey 304 pregnant women and 431 fever patients were identified. Samples of these will be collected on Tuesday,” informed a health official.

The disease remains difficult to diagnose in initial days due to similarity of symptoms with other routine fever. The disease though remains a major threat for elderly and unborn babies of infected women. It is only through lab test that the infection can be established.

The department has so far collected blood and urine samples of 69 suspects including 32 pregnant women, 25 fever patients and 12 of those in contact. The samples have been sent to SMS medical college for tests and report is expected soon.

Following detection of Zika infection in an elderly woman residing in the Shastri Nagar area, the disease was first reported in Jaipur. The discovery also attracted attention of union government health department and UNICEF, since joint efforts are being held to contain the disease from spreading.

As the Zika virus is spread by mosquitoes, the officials have been attempting to reduce the vector presence. Officials carried out on spot source reduction and treated 2,057 containers with temiphose during the survey. While anti-mosquito spray was done in more than 300 rooms of 66 houses.

The Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) has also extended its support to the drive and has proposed selective fogging through compact machines. Officials have also been attempting to associate public support for reducing the mosquito menace and promoting awareness towards the disease through distribution of pamphlets and public announcement in the area.

The officials though assure that the disease has not spread beyond the locality, arrival of reports of the collected sample is likely to confirm on more cases.
