A day after an independent councillor from Rawatsar – Harveer Saharan - was shot dead by unidentified assailants, the Hanumangarh police initiated investigation into the matter and arrested the main accused in the murder.

The arrest happened within hours of the case being reported to the police who claim they were not only able to identify the accused but also arrest him. The cops have started looking for his accomplice who has been identified as well.

According to cops, the main accused is Ram Niwas Mehla. “Ram Niwas was arrested from Taranagar in Churu district after investigation proved his active involvement in the murder,” informed Dinesh MN, Inspector General – Bikaner range.

The officer added, “So far the man has claimed that he murdered Harveer Saharan out of personal enmity.” When asked if the accused was working at the behest of any gang, the IG said, “So far no such information has come forward and he claims to have murdered the councillor out of personal enmity only.”

Meanwhile, the cops have identified the accomplice who helped Ram Niwas in the murder. Following the identification of the co-accused, teams have been dispatched to Haryana in search of the accused.

After the murder, the Hanumangarh police had its hand full. “However, several teams were set up and tasked with developing leads regarding the accomplice’s location. Teams were handed out specific investigation related points which they had to develop and report back to senior officials so the investigation could head in the proper direction,” sources said.

On Tuesday, Khimsar legislator Hanuman Beniwal reached Rawatsar demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the matter. Moreover, his demand was seconded by BJP politicos from the area as well.

The post-mortem was conducted on the dead body of the councillor and it was then handed over to the family members. A huge crowd of supporters had assembled at the hospital and later at Saharan’s house for the last glimpse of the councillor. Towards afternoon, the last rites were performed followed by cremation of the deceased.

It should be noted that on Monday afternoon, unidentified men murdered a councillor of Rawatsar municipality in Hanumangarh district after firing multiple shots at the man in broad daylight.

Shockingly the incident occurred in the SDM office premises where the man had gone to meet the government officer for discussion related to some developmental work in the area.

The bullet-riddled councillor was rushed to the hospital where even Cabinet minister Dr Ram Pratap reached and helped the doctors in the treatment. However, the man succumbed to his injuries. Notably, the man’s wife is the chairperson of the municipality and he was even arrested by the Special Operations Group in a murder case six months back and was release on bail last month.
