Congress leadership has decided to ‘sideline’ senior leaders’ advice in the selection of Lok Sabha candidates as their recommended candidates lost the Assembly elections with forfeiting of security deposits. A report on whose candidates lost with what margin has been drafted by the state Congress and sent to the party high command for further action.

Ahead of the assembly elections senior leaders had lobbied for their candidates. Even they gave ‘word’ to the party high command guaranteeing their victory. When the results were announced the tall claims were exposed. Not only they lost the election but also their security deposit as they failed to secure even one-sixth of the total votes polled in their respective constituencies.

There were 11 seats out of 195 where Congress candidates lost the deposits. These include Pankaj Pratap Singh (Siwana), Anil Dangi (Bhilwara), Bhanwarlal Pujari (Ratangarh), Sonu Chitana (Merta), Jasaram Rathore (Marwar Junction), Jeeva Ram Arya (Sirohi), Ritesh Bairwa (Dudu), Ajay Kumar (Mahuwa), Sona Devi (Raisingh Nagar), Daulat Singh Meena (Bassi), and Nanda Ram (Kishangarh).

This led to major embarrassment to the grand old party which though formed the government in Rajasthan. When the senior leaders were grilled by the party high command over these defeat they said that the candidates were given tickets on the recommendations of a few senior leaders who during the Congress election committee meetings had continuously pressed for their candidature. Hence on the directions of the party high command Rajasthan incharge Avinash Pande ‘probed’ into the matter and intimated the high command on recommendations of certain leaders who lobbied for the candidates.

Sources said that the leaders have been asked to clarify on how their candidates lost badly. It has been learnt that party would avoid seeking advice of such leaders in the selection of LS candidates. “In the review party has observed that a few leaders had lobbied for the candidates whose security deposits were forfeited. We have intimated the same to the party high command,” said a senior Congress leader.
