A special police station to deal land-related disputes and scams, the JDA Thana is expected to be brought back in action at state capital Jaipur. The police station was established during the previous tenure of Congress government and was discontinued soon after BJP government came in power.

The Thana once again returns in the proposal as Congress gets reinstated in government at the state and Shanti Dhariwal once again became the minister for urban development. In his initial few meetings, the minister had expressed the will to restore the police station in force.

“In consideration of the number of pending cases of land frauds and frequent cases of encroachment of government land there is a need for a special police station, the minister is in favour of the thana too,” says an official at urban development department.

Dhariwal was minister for home and urban development department when the special station to deal real estate issues was first established. It was named after the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) as in most cases of encroachment, the two departments had to work together. The police station though in its few years of operation was unable to achieve the desired impact. There were more than a dozen land mafia operational during the tenure and the number of pending cases increased every year. There were allegations of connivance between the land mafia and officials of the police station before it got closed. All the matters were subsequently transferred to Jaipur police commissionerate.

Before being closed in mid of 2014, the police station has registered around 3000 cases. From a near hundred in 2011, the number of cases registered at the station increased above 1,100 in next year, in 2013 there were more than 1,300 cases registered at the station. However, the pendency too increased from 20 in 2011 to 600 in 2013.
