Lack of awareness makes cancer a killer disease

Owing to the deteriorating lifestyle and lack of awareness in India,the number of cancer patients is on a rapid surge. 

World Cancer Day, which was held on February 4, was organised to raise awareness about the killer disease, its treatment and ways of prevention.  

“In men, cancer of the lungs, lips, mouth and throat is spreading rapidly,”Senior Chest Specialist Dr MK Gupta said.“The main cause of lungs, lip and mouth cancer is tobacco.Indian men have been addicted to cigarette and bidi. They also have the habit of chewing tobacco.This causes cancer of the lungs and mouth.In Rajasthan, such patients are increasing year after year,”said Dr Gupta.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), in its projection, said in 2016 the total number of new cancer cases is likely to reach nearly 17.3 lakh in 2020.Over 7.36 lakh people are expected to succumb to the disease in 2016 while the figure is estimated to shoot up to 8.8 lakh by 2020. 

The incidence and prevalence of brain tumor is also growing in India. This is the most common type of cancer among children.Senior Neurosurgeon, Dr KK Bansal said that“People with a brain tumor often experience symptoms like headaches, which may be severe and may worsen with activity or early morning seizures,personality or memory changes,nausea or vomiting and vision changes. Surgery is the most common type of treatment for a brain tumor and is often the only treatment performed for a benign brain tumor.”  

As per studies, India has the third highest number of blood cancer patients in the world after USA and China.“Timely diagnosis is the key. It can be treated by medicines if diagnosed early. It can be diagnosed by simple blood test,” DrUpendra Sharma, Senior Hematologist and blood cancer experts said.
