An eight-year-old girl, belonging to Scheduled Caste community, on Wednesday morning was found murdered in a mustard field in Gangliyakhedi village under Pagariya police station of Jhalawar district.
The girl had been missing since Tuesday late night. Police suspect that the victim was raped before she was strangled to death as no marks of injury were visible on her body except a minor scratch likely to be caused by a nail on her chest.
Police investigations have zeroed on 20-year-old Dashrath Singh of the same village as he was the only person seen with the minor girl.
Before the police could interrogate Dashrath about the entire incident, he attempted to commit suicide by touching live electric wires on Wednesday morning. However, the villagers rescued him and rushed him in unconscious state to SRG hospital in Jhalawar, where is undergoing treatment.
SHO of Pageriya police station Radha Kishan said that deceased girl, a class 3 student, was living with her maternal grandparents in Gangliyakhedi village while her parents were in Nolaye village under Pedawa police station of the district.
The girl after returing from school last evening was engaged in grazing the household cattle near her home with other children of the village but she did not return home till late evening following which the family members initiated a hunt for her but she could not be found till late night.
The body of the girl was today spotted by villagers in mustard field near her home following which they informed the police that recovered the body from the field, the SHO said.
Dashrath Singh has emerged as key suspect in the matter as he was spotted last evening in drunken state around the minor girl but he is yet to be interrogated as he is currently in unconscious state, the SHO said. The family members of the deceased girl have also pointed finger at Dashrath Singh to be key suspected in the crime, he added.
Police have lodged a case of murder cum rape under various sections of IPC and the body was today noon handed over to the family members.
