Fearing embarrassment on a child born at very late age, a couple with married children abandoned their seven-day baby girl in the jungle on Jhalawar-Jhalrapatan road near a warehouse under Bakani police station of Jhalawar district on Tuesday (October 9).

The baby was found by the passersby who took her to the government hospital in Jhalawar where she died. The most tragic aspect of this incident is that it happened on the eve of the World Girl Child Day.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Jhalawar, Khushal Singh Rajpurohit said that the parents of the girl identified as Viramlal Regar (38), a resident of Thobadiya village and his wife Sorambai (35)  have been arrested under sections 315, 317 and 304 of IPC. Primary interrogation revealed that the arrested couple already have five sons and a daughter, all of them are married. The woman said that she was not aware that she was pregnant and when she finally gave birth to a girl she thought she will not be able to explain or face her married children and grandchildren.

The couple claim it was the fear of shame and embarrassment that forced them to take this step. The woman was on Tuesday noon discharged from the hospital and while returning to their village, the couple abandoned the girl on the way, the ASP said.
