Kota district collector Muktanand Agrawal called upon the coaching institutes and hostel management to comply with the guidelines issued by state government on providing stress-free and education-friendly environment along with a relaxed fee structure to the students who enroll themselves for the courses here.

Agrawal was presiding over a meeting of hostel and  coaching institute representatives, district and police officials. Kota, famous as coaching hub of the country, hit the limelight in last week of December last year when three students in the city committed suicide within a span of three days. Around 1.50 lakh students from across the country come to Kota every year to prepare for entrance exams and secure admission in IIT-JEE and medical colleges.

The district collector advised the institutes and hostel management to rise above commercial and business interests. He told them to provide safe, secure and stress-free future to the students preparing for IIT-JEE, NEET and other competitive exams in Kota and help the administration making it a safe place for the young students arriving in the city.

The district collector also directed the management of the coaching institutes to relax the process of charging one-time fee. He recommended that the institutes charge the fee in installments as per the guideline to reduce the financial burden on the guardians of the students enrolled in there.

On-roll psychologists, not part-timers for counseling coaching students should be deputed at the coaching institutes, the collector said. He asked the coaching institutes to cooperate with the Hope Sansthan and district administration’s joint team visiting the institutes for routine inspection.

Kota city SP Deepak Bhargav urged the institutes to provide the helpline and Child Line numbers by printing them on note books and diaries issued by coaching institutes to the students. He also asked the hostel management to prepare a database of students staying in hostels and to hand over the same to police.

Additional collector Vasudev Malawat, ADM city Pankaj Ojha, ASP Rakesh Mill, trainee IAS Devendra Kumar, superintendent, Kota medical college Dr Devendra Vijayvergeya, along with the representatives of coaching institutes and hostels, were present in the meeting.

At least 19 coaching students have taken the extreme step of killing themselves this year. Only seven coaching students committed suicide in 2017, compared to the deaths in 2018.
