Kota the education hub of Rajasthan is situated in the south-eastern part of the state at a distance of about 240 km south of Jaipur.
This constituency is formed of eight assembly segments namely, Kota South, Kota North, Ramganjmandi, Peepalda, Sangod, Ladpura, Keshoraipatan and Bundi.
The present incumbent Om Birla a three time MLA, defeated sitting MP Ijeyaraj Singh of Congress to win this seat. His was the only seat BJP managed to retain in the by elections after it fielded 4 MLAs elected in 2013 as MPs in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.
The Congress and the BJP have each won 7 times in the Kota-Bundi seat out of the 16 polls held so far. The Congress could win only twice in the last two decades.
Kota a city that is developing at a fast pace had been included for development under the ambitious smart city project of the Union government.
The present MP Om Birla has a track record of active participation in the Parliament and has managed to get several high profile projects related to roads, bridges, drinking water and health services completed for his constituency. But the people of the area had been expecting more from him.
Air services that were hurriedly inaugurated in Kota, but failed to actually take off, is a sore issue with the residents who had high hopes after Birla had pledged its completion and smooth running.
Another issue that plagues the area is farmers’ angst. There is resentment over garlic procurement and also the non-availability of urea has been a cause of resentment among the farmers. While the people accept that the issue was raised in Parliament by their MP but they are not happy as an adequate amount of urea were still not made available.
Several industrial units have closed in Kota over the past several years and this is a sore issue with people who had found employment in those units.
