A report of institutions working against drug addiction in children has come out with shocking revelation. The report states that Ajmer is the second city after Goa in the country, having the most number of drug addicts in children.

Despite this, there is neither a rehabilitation centre, nor are there any arrangements for the same.

The small world of children addicted to drugs is in the lanes surrounding the famous Dargah in Ajmer. Both drug smugglers and the addicts, feel safe in these streets, the report says. All types of drugs are readily available to these children. Whether it is a deadly intoxicant smack, charas and ganja, or the whitener and other solutions used to seal a punctured tyre.

Organizations working for the welfare of children through Child Line have done extensive survey on children suffering from drug addiction. According to this, most addicts in city are in the nearby areas of the Dargah, railway station, Andarkot, Jalian Kabristan, Diggi, Dehli Gate, Fawara Chauraha and Bajrangarh.

The detailed report about shopkeepers and anti-social elements providing drugs to the children has been given to the district police. “There are over two dozen places which provide easy access to the children including stationary, cold syrups, hash, weed, opium, etc. Everyone has information about growing addiction of drugs in children in Ajmer, but no one has the way to cure this problem,” an official said.

Deputy Superintendent of Police, Dargah area Rahul Vashisht said the police make every effort to keep the children away from the addiction. “In the year 2018, 70 children were rescued by the police through various means, out of which, 63 children were handed over to their families. Also, 7 children were sent to the Child Home by the Child Welfare Committee, whereas 75 cases have been registered against those who sell drugs to the children.

The children are openly informing about the drug addiction available in Ajmer and how they step into the world of crime due to this.

According to Akash Soni, who works with an organisation Ek Udaan, there are many gangs operating in Ajmer that make these children a victim of addiction and later push these children into committing crimes. The police has taken the report seriously and is working on a plan to save the children.
