Factionalism in the BJP came to the fore on Thursday during the foundation stone laying ceremony of a water tank at Malviya Nagar.

Local BJP councillor Ashok Garg was not invited for the event, which had Health Minister Kalicharan Saraf as the chief guest and chairperson of the State Women’s Commission Suman Sharam as a guest of honour.

During the ceremony, Garg allegedly tried to disrupt the ceremony and sat on a dharna. Some people tried to stop him for his interference and allegedly assaulted him. Then, cops took him away from the spot to the Malviya Nagar police station.

Garg said he was standing at a temple situated near the venue. “Some people came to the temple and attacked me. They tore my shirt and broke spectacles,” alleged Garg.

He claimed, “The Minister sent his supporters to attack me. I had allotted land from the JDA for the water tank and approved the budget. Even after this, they did not invite me for the ceremony.”

Saying that he wasn’t aware about Garg’s allegations, Saraf said that the councillor was invited for the ceremony but did not come.

However, the minister said he wasn’t aware about Garg being attacked by anyone.
