“Judicial activism is like nuclear power. Neither good nor bad. Depends on how you use it,” said Congress leader and noted lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi on Saturday.

Singhvi, who in Jaipur on Saturday for an event spoke at length on various issues related to judicial activism, the vacancies of judges in courts, media activism, the sting operations which it does and on the disruptions in parliament and assemblies. He mentioned that there was need for post judgment audit also.

The occasion was the discussion on his book “ Straight Talk” at the event hosted by “Write Circle” at a city hotel.

As a moderator Vaidehi Singh, founder principal of Sawai Bhawani Singh, asked him about the role of media, Singhvi said: “Media today is more about sensationalism and less about sense”. He suggested that our country needs to have an independent commission to monitor TRPs, so that the audience are not fooled by it.

About the speeches made in parliament he said: “Some of the most brilliant speeches are given by people who you have never heard about.”

He said that he was suggested by those who introduced telecast of parliament proceedings that perhaps they should stop it. As a large number members try to create unruly situations just to catch the public eye,” he said.

Earlier, at the start of the session, he accepted that he was privileged to be son of noted jurist ML Singhvi.

However, he added that that to be under the shadow of a father who was an eminent jurist wasn’t that rosy at it came with a lot of responsibility. He said that he doesn’t associate very much with the image of an politician as he considers himself to be a lawyer first and how much he loves his practice.
