Jodhpur, known globally as a famous tourist spot, faces serious drinking water and unemployment issues. The major source of supplying drinking water to the Jodhpur Lok Sabha constituency is Indira Gandhi Canal. Though, it fails to meet the water demand in the summer, leading certain pockets, particularly Jodhpur city area, to get water supply in three-four days.

When PHED does maintenance works of Indira Gandhi Canal the administration is forced to get supply from Rajiv Gandhi Canal. In 2017 when the canal was closed down for maintenance works Jodhpur city faced deep water crisis. PHED could supply only 215 MLD water while the demand was for 315 MLD water. MLAs, had registered protest on poor planning of PHED.

Kailana and Thakht Sagar are two major reservoirs for drinking water, where water from Indira Gandhi Canal is stored. But cuts from the canals leave the reservoirs below water storage that hit water supply, particularly in summer. In rural areas the borewell is one of the major sources of water. But they are not in adequate number forcing the people to depend on stepwells and ponds.

Jodhpur has five large lakes located on outskirts in a more or less natural setting. Balsamand, along with the other four—Lalsagar, Kailana, Takhatsagar and Umedsagar—can hold about 700 million cubic feet (m cu ft) water at a given time, which can support about 8 lakh people for eight months. But these lakes do not get adequate water because of the poor state of catchments and canals which carry rainwater to them.

Unemployment is another major issue which needs to be addressed by area MLAs and MPs. Livelihood of sizeable population of the area rests upon tourism activities while others do odd jobs. There is shortage of industries and factories. Now locals hopes rest on Barmer Refinery and Petro Chemical Complex project where state government has collaborated with HPCL. The complex is supposed to generate thousand direct employments.
