There seems to be an infestation of rats in the Intensive Care Unit of the Mathuradas Mathur Hospital in Jodhpur. Several patients, including those suffering from swine flu are undergoing treatment at the hospital.

A few days ago, a female patient suffering from swine flu was reportedly bitten by the mice that are reportedly roaming around on the hospital premises. The said patient is no more and succumbed to the flu, sources said.

“It was only after the members of the elderly woman who was admitted for treatment of the flu complained of the bite marks of rodents on February 12 that the administration swung into action,” a source said. The night the woman passed away, the hospital administration managed to pacify the family members and summoned a pest controlling unit.

What is the reason?

Hospital sources said that outside the ICU premises, food carried by the relatives of the patient is thrown into the dustbin, which attracts the rats who source their food from these containers till the time they are emptied. This has been one of the reasons being attributed to the infestation of rats in hospital.

Court had taken note

This isn’t the first time such a case has been reported. In past years, Justice Gopalakrishna Vyas and Justice Nirmaljeet Kaur had taken the cognizance of similar matter when a child undergoing treatment at the hospital after an accident involving a school bus, was also bitten by mice. Orders were given to improve their sanitation system, but they were not executed. Justice Vyas has since retired and Justice Nirmal Kaur has been transferred to another court.

No renewal of contract

One of the problems, said sources, is due non-renewal of the contract of the pest controllers. Due to the non-renewal the controllers never came and the rats continued to grow in number.

Rodent Trouble

  • Food carried by the relatives of the patient is thrown into the dustbin, which attracts the rats
  • Due to the non-renewal the controllers never came and the rats continued to grow in number.
  • HC gave orders to improve sanitation system, but were not executed.
