A surprise checking by the deputy commissioner of police (DCP) West, Jodhpur, Monika Sain, resulted in a bunch of youths laying siege to her vehicle and suspension of three cops who stood there as mute spectators without resorting to their primary task: policing.

The incident happened on the outskirts of Jodhpur city near Kankani. The DCP was patrolling the area late on Thursday night when her vehicle reached Kankani, the village, which had shot to limelight with the alleged deer poaching incident involving actor Salman Khan during the shooting of the film Hum Sath Sath Hain.

“When the DCP along with the plainclothesmen reached the area, some unidentified youth surrounded her vehicle at Kankani,” an official said. Since the police travelling with her were in plain clothes, the youths couldn’t recognize them as cops. The DCP was travelling by a private car, which she had used to inspect the areas falling under her jurisdiction. “She was inspecting the areas of Jhanwar, Luni, Kudi and Basni that night. Her gunman and driver were with her in plain clothes,” the official said.

The youth were later identified as belonging to the Bishnoi community that abounds in the region. The Bishnoi community is known for their love of nature and is fiercely protective about it. They are against poaching of wildlife animals and seeing a private car travelling at such late hour they mistook them for poachers. When the DCP herself stepped out of the car, the youths fled the spot without bringing anyone to harm.

What, however, irked the police officer was a patrol team of Luni police station which was stationed at the spot did nothing about the incident and remained a mute spectator to the hooliganism of the local youths. The DCP later instructed the Luni police to take the boys into custody. “She suspended ASI Hamir Singh, Constable Kuldeep Singh and Driver Walaram after the episode,” an official said.

the Luni police later arrested Om Prakash Bishnoi, a resident of Kudi, Bhikharam, a resident of Kankani and Shekhar, a resident of Kankani. The accused said in the inquiry that they had received information about poachers roaming the area in a private car.

Mute Spectators

What irked the police officer was a patrol team of Luni police station which was stationed at the spot remained a mute spectator. Three cops were then suspended.
