It was just in the nick of time that the state government appointed vice-chancellors (V-C) in two major universities of the state. A few hours before the implementation of electoral code of conduct, Dr Gulab Singh Chauhan was appointed as V-C of Jai Narayan Vyas (JNV) University of Jodhpur while professor RP Singh was handed over the reins at the Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati (MDS) University of Ajmer. The posts were lying vacant from the last four months in these two varsities.

After receiving the information about the press conference of Election Commission (EC) of India, the state government got into action and made the appointments. Both the V-Cs took charge with immediate effect after orders were released by the government. The vice-chancellor committee for Jodhpur University had prepared and sent the panel to the government long ago while the committee for the Ajmer university had sent its panel to the government last week.

RP Singh was earlier the V-C of JNV University and his tenure ended four months ago and in his place Dr Radhey Shyam Sharma was appointed as the acting V-C. While 62-year-old Dr Chauhan retired from the post of professor from the JNV university. During his tenure, he remained active in teachers’ politics and was also elected as a syndicate member. Both the newly appointed V-Cs are considered close to the RSS. Chairman of RBSE professor BL Chaudhary’s name was also doing rounds but at the last minute he was sidelined.
