The youths of Jalore district are increasingly falling into the trap of smack addiction and once the realisation of having caught in a deadly situation sets in, they find it difficult to escape from its clutches.

Its trickle down effect can be seen on increase in number of crimes like theft, robbery and murder committed by the addicted youth of the district to earn easy money and satisfy their urge.  The police and some non-governmental organisations are working in this direction, but no concrete steps have been taken as yet to help the victims overcome the addiction.

In the district, drugs are easily available in every lane, village or town these days. Though efforts are being made by the Jalore Police to free the district by running a special campaign Sanjivani Yojana to eradicate the drug addiction from smack, the youth are uncooperative.

Now, the situation in the district is that the number of people trapped in drug addiction is rapidly increasing. Many people have even seen their children dying in front of them due to excessive intake of drugs. There cases of smack, charas, opium, hemp, or cheap drugs in the district are ever-growing. At the same time, the drug de-addiction centres are of little use as fearing defamation and fear of being ostracized by the society, the families shy away from taking their addicted children to such centres for treatment.

To get hold of drugs, youth are committing crime. It has been found that in the last few months, maximum criminals were drug addicts, whom the police have arrested in the cases of theft, robbery among others. The interrogation also states that most of the incidents are carried out to make money to fulfill the need of drug addiction.

The illegal trade of drugs and medicines takes place on a large scale and drugs like charas, smack, opium and poppy husk worth lakhs of rupees are sold on a daily basis.

It was under the supervision of Superintendent of Police Vikas Sharma, Sanchore Vitt Adhikari Om Prakash Ujwal started the special campaign. Soon after, various awareness programmes and camps have been organised to give information about the damage done by smack to the human body and mind.

Till now, 13 cases have been registered in the scheme in Jalore district, and around 64 gm of smack has been recovered from the victims. Along with it, opium and poppy husk have also been recovered, and the investigation is underway.
