Now, an autonomous board will look after the management of water supply and sewerage management of Jaipur city. A state government ordinance for establishment of the Jaipur Supply and Sewerage Board (JSSB) will be in force from today, (August 10).

The board will consist of over a dozen members including representatives from Jaipur Development Authority, municipal corporation, RIICO, finance, state government and others. It will remain under administration of LSG and will have jurisdiction over the entire urban area of the city related to water and sewerage services.

“The board will work in close association with existing government agencies and implement by itself or through the agencies related to water supply and sewerage,” said an official. As the ordinance comes in force, the board may take another few months to come in operative state and takes over related services from other departments. The staff deputed at these services in the existing departments will also be put on disposal of the board gradually.

A initiative for water sustainability, establishment of the board is also part of the policy reform agreed upon between state government and Asian Development Bank. It will thus also focus on making the city more responsible towards water while making the management system more effective.

Several penalties and even imprisonment has been proposed against wastage of water and is also expected to make water a little more expensive for the public. On the brighter side though it also proposes for providing 24X7 supply of quality water to every household. Measures towards treatment of sewerage water and rainwater harvesting propose for a sustainable supply. The board is formally to be constituted through a bill by Rajasthan Assembly. The Rajasthan Urban Infrastructure Development Projects had its draft prepared an year ago.
