The festival of lights Diwali is upon us and while most houses, offices and marketplaces have been illuminated to mark the occasion, several street lights in the city stand blacked out. It is due to negligence of the Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) that thousands of street lights are nonfunctional. Usually, JMC repairs the city’s nonfunctional street lights every year before Diwali and new street lights are installed in colonies. But with assembly elections to be held on December 7, the BJP councillors including mayor Ashok Lahoti are busy investing time in its preparations.

The mayor himself is seeking tickets from the Sanganer assembly constituency and is busy with campaigning. Due to the authorities concerned occupied drafting poll strategies, the street lighting system of the city has been left crippled. Till date, more than 3,000 complaints of street lights are pending with the municipal corporation’s call centre.

According to sources, the lights of several major roads in the city are not working. The municipal officials are fixing the light of the main road while road lights in the interiors of many colonies are lying nonfunctional from last several days. Sources confirmed that more than 3,000 complaints related to road lights are pending at the city’s call centre. Nearly 500 complaints of road lights are received by the JMC’s call centre on a daily basis and during Diwali, the complaints have doubled.

With assembly elections around the corner, municipal councillors are putting pressure to install new road lights and that is why the issue of fixing the default has taken a backseat. The staff and contractors of the municipal electric wing are busy installing new road lights.

Ram Singh, a resident of Barkat Nagar said, “The road lights in front of my house are nonfunctional from last 15 days. I have filed a complaint four times on the call centre, but to no avail. When DNA contacted Chairman of Municipal Corporation Light Committee (B) Chandra Bhatia on the phone, he did not take the call.
