Jaipur: Poor quality of roads - Lokayukta seeks report

The officials have been directed to report the action they took against 31 engineers who were charge-sheeted for poor quality of road works in 2016.

Lokayukta justice SS Kothari has sought factual report on poor quality of road construction from UDH principal secretary and Jaipur development commissioner (JDC). The officials have been directed to report the action they took against 31 engineers who were charge-sheeted for poor quality of road works in 2016.

The ombudsman swung into action taking cognizance of media reports which highlighted that Rs100 crore was spent on road works two years ago were found to be sub-standard. The then three additional chief engineers probed the matter and took samples of the material used.

After the investigation, the notices were served on 87 engineers for poor quality material used in road works. Out of them, 31 engineers were even charge-sheeted. Two years have passed since the charge-sheet was filed, though not a single engineer faced any action till date.

The media reports also underlined that contractors who supplied poor quality material were not black listed and they are still being commissioned for road works. It was also learnt that UDH department rejected a proposal which recommended charge-sheet against four engineers, including a JEN.

In the light of the media reports, the ombudsman prime facie called it negligence on the part of the public servants and sought a factual report on samples of material collected, chargesheets proposal from UDH and JDA.

Details sought

The JDA has been instructed to give details about the contractors whose material used in road works was found to be sub-standard. Details of tenders and works given to these contractors were also sought.
