Rajasthan is known the world over for its hospitality. While the culture of hospitality lives large in the public domain, it does so with unabashed fervour in the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation (RTDC) staff who put their best foot forward when it comes to offering their impeccable services. Except, the public loves to host guests, while the RTDC staff ensure the babus are well-fed and served.

One of the babus posted with the corporation seems to have developed a taste for RTDC’s hospitality. The public servant has taken a special liking for a breed of chicken that is unlike the sterilised broilers served in the open market.

The desi murga, a domestic variety of the chicken, is considered to taste better than its poultry cousin. This breed of the chicken is not available at regular meat stores and is retailed only at a handful of outlets on the city outskirts.

Every week, select staff members get to “treat” sahib with his favourite delicacy. The sahib reminds them of getting his stuff, which costs Rs700 per kilogram. The staff members get the bird from the market and then make a special meal out of it. The bureaucrat apparently got a taste of the desi variant in Jaipur when a staff member, reportedly in his eagerness to please him, presented the chicken to him. The sahib has become so fond of the dish that now he not only gets it ordered from the market but is also learning to cook. “He is getting there, he is picking up quickly,” a staffer said.

While the sahib is now served on a platter his favourite cuisine, the chickens have come home to roost for the staffer who introduced the desi murga to his boss.

I am loving it
