Congress members and independent MLA Nand Kishore Maharia created a ruckus in the assembly on Thursday and boycotted Question Hour when Speaker Kailash Meghwal transferred a question on farmers loan waiver to the cooperative department, resulting in deferring the issue.

The first question of the house, which was listed by Maharia, had four points seeking details on farmer loan waiver and minimum support price (MSP) for crops. But the Speaker did not permit a reply on the question arguing that it was transferred by the agriculture department to the cooperative department.

This led to heated arguments between the Speaker and the opposition MLAs who stormed the Well. They alleged that it was a deliberate attempt to transfer the question to the cooperative department in order to delay a reply on farmers loan waiver. Deputy leader of the Opposition Ramesh Meena protested in the Well of the House and staged a dharna.

He was joined by Congress MLA Sukhram. The speaker asked Congress whip Govind Dotasara to maintain decorum but the members stormed into the Well and demanded a loan waiver for farmers. A fuming Maharia tore down the questionnaire as a protest. It was followed by no business for 10 minutes, following which Congress MLAs along with Maharia walked out.

Meghwal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rajendra Rathore condemned the behaviour of the opposition members. “The government was ready to answer the question when it is the day for the cooperative department but they used unparliamentary language and boycotted,” Rathore said. While the Congress MLAs dubbed the Speaker’s way of running the house as autocratic. “The Speaker called the question of farmers loan waiver irrelevant,” said Dotasara. Maharia stated that he was not intimated about his question being transferred to the cooperative department.
