History could be written in the annals of Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) if Ashok Lahoti wins in the Assembly elections, as in such a scenario, the city will get third mayor for the first time in a single tenure of five years. Keeping with its age-old tradition, the BJP has this time as well handed over ticket to Jaipur mayor and he will fight as a candidate from Sanganer assembly constituency.

Like Lahoti, even Ashok Parnami was given ticket during his tenure as a mayor while Mohanlal Gupta and Sheel Dhabhai contested assembly elections after completing their term as a mayor. On the other hand, the Congress did not give ticket to Jyoti Khandelwal, the only directly elected mayor of the city though she had a claim from Kishanpol assembly constituency. There are two mayors in three boards out of the five boards of JMC and two of them have completed their five-year term.

Mohan Lal Gupta
(1994-1999)

Gupta was the first mayor of Jaipur. In 1994, after Jaipur municipal council was upgraded to  municipal corporation, Gupta was elected as the mayor after first municipal election. Gupta completed his five-year tenure from 1994 to 1999. Gupta was fielded by BJP from Kishanpol assembly constituency in 2003 assembly elections which he won and has been a legislator from Kishanpole from the past 15 years.

Nirmala Verma-Sheel Dhabhai
(1999-2004)

The post of Jaipur mayor was reserved for OBC woman in JMC elections in 1999. BJP elected Nirmala Verma as the mayor and she was the first female mayor of the city.  Verma died during her midterm as mayor. Subsequently, Sheel Dabhai was elected as Jaipur mayor. After the completion of her tenure, the BJP gave ticket to Dabhai from Kotputli assembly constituency. But she lost the election.

Ashok Parnami-Pankaj Joshi
(2004-2009)

Former BJP president Ashok Parnami was the mayor of Jaipur from 2004 to 2008. The BJP gave ticket to Parnami in 2008 from the Adarsh Nagar assembly constituency. Parnami won the election and soon after he resigned from the post of mayor. The then deputy mayor Pankaj Joshi was  then chosen as the fifth mayor of the city.

Jyoti Khandelwal
(2009-2014)

In 2009, the rule of direct election of the mayor was implemented. In the direct election, Jyoti Khandelwal of Congress was elected as the mayor. Khandelwal completed her five-year term.

Nirmal Nahata-Ashok Lahoti
(2014-2019)

After formation of the BJP government in 2013, the rule of mayor’s direct election was rolled back and BJP’s Nirmal Nahata was elected as the seventh mayor of Jaipur. Due to the internal politics of BJP, Nahata was removed from the post of mayor two years later. BJP then appointed Ashok Lahoti as the mayor. Lahoti is now BJP’s candidate from Sanganer assembly constituency. If Lahoti wins the election, then within five years, the third mayor will have to be appointed.
