BJP - the party with more numbers than Congress in Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC), lost to its own rebel - who managed to get an upper hand in the number game thereby inflicting loss of face and post of mayor for BJP in the state capital. What BJP needs to realise is that what unfolded on Monday and Tuesday is much beyond a number game. Cause of the problem now moves beyond the reasons for BJP getting trounced in saffron citadel Jaipur.

If one were to look at the face of it, visible factors are - a rebel candidate, cross voting by BJP councillors and Congress supporting BJP rebel to ensure a well strategised win. Take a closer look and multiple reasons emerge. BJP, the party that claims democratic functioning was working autocratically; an allegation that is being levelled for last several years. A candidate was foisted and no scope was left for reconsideration or even dialogue - even when multiple candidates came forth.
Several leaders - both who won and lost - are upset with the party. Especially, as there is no cognizance of reports about party functionaries, leaders and public representatives who have worked against party candidates to support Congress candidates. One can only wonder whether they turned a blind eye or keenly watched what unfolded.
BJP had no effective team to take on Congress, that is now in power. There was no plan, no contingency plan and no disaster management plan. There was no clarity about who was responsible and calling the shots. It was a classic case of too many cooks.
BJP’s knee-jerk reaction of suspending Vishnu Lata from the party for six years; but quixotically handing over the investigation about who cross voted to the very same people who were responsible for ensuring smooth expedition of the election for BJP shows that the problem runs deep and the saffron party would need absolute transformation in its style of functioning if it has to consolidate position. Ground level problems cannot be ignored, the leadership is proving inefficient in motivating its cadre.
Jaipur Municipal Corporation has been a reflection of BJP’s deep roots in Jaipur. It had more councillors even when Jyoti Khandelwal of Congress was elected Mayor.
What happened in Jaipur is the first visible result of the resentment. The party with a difference needs to urgently sort out its differences. Success of the Jaipur coup could enthuse score settlers; and if this is done during polls - it would be undoing of BJP’s Mission 2019.
