The underground Metro station at Chandpol will rise vertically to generate more commercial space for the Jaipur metro. The expansion of the station is planned as part of  Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation (JMRC) plans to develop more than 20,000 square metre of space available adjacent to its seven operational stations at Phase 1.

“Most of these spaces are being used for parking purposes and JMRC desires to develop these spaces for commercial purpose including parking to facilitate commuters and earn non-fare revenue,” says a metro official.
The rail corporation is in process of feasibility study to develop the properties on public-private partnership model. The parking areas to be developed with a smooth interface of the adjoining metro stations are envisaged to serve a double purpose by drawing more footfalls and improving commuter numbers.

Jaipur metro in its fourth year of operation in city is still struggling with low ridership numbers and this has also adversely impacted the corporation’s revenue generation plans.

While the ticket revenue remains low, JMRC also finds difficult to rent out its commercial spaces at the metro stations due to low footfall. The corporation has initiated several schemes over the past few months to draw more visitors. The corporation has come up with schemes including free lease for cultural activities and ‘selfie’ campaign.

The proposal to develop the parking space comes as another effort in that direction. These spaces lie along metro stations of Mansarovar, New Atish Market, Vivek Vihar, Ramnagar, Civil Lines, Railway Station and Chandpol.

These stations located among densely populated areas are also in centre of major commercial activities. Parking remains a persistent challenge in many of these areas and metro by offering space even to non-metro commuters seeks to put the space on optimum utilization.

The Metro’s low ridership has also been a result of change in the original plans which envisaged the development of line between Sitapura Industrial Area and the Walled City via the

Tonk Road. It was, however, put on hold and the shorter line between Mansarovar and Chandpol was taken up after state government intervention.
