A Jaipur-based person, working as a chief engineer in a shipping company, has gone missing along with nine others after the vessel carrying a crew of 26 Indians capsized in the Pacific off the Philippines. The over 33000-tonne vessel was carrying nickel ore as cargo which may have liquified leading to the incident. The Search and Rescue (SAR) team has rescued 16 crew members.

The missing chief engineer, identified as Shyam Singh, is a native of Tamkore village in Jhunjhunu district and currently a resident of Jhotwara area of the city. Speaking to DNA, Shyam Singh’s brother, Sher Singh, himself a captain in Merchant Navy, said, “The Ship was sailing from Indonesia to China with nickel ore. It is a dangerous cargo which shifts on its own. Probably that resulted in the capsizing of the vessel.”

Nickel ore is the deadliest dry bulk commodity that is shipped by sea. As a cargo that turns to the slurry during a voyage, nickel ore causes many vessels to capsize. The International Association of Dry Cargo Shipowners states that ore is at a high risk of liquefying if it holds too much moisture.

The incident occurred around 2 am on October 13. “The weather was rough. We have learned from the rescued crew members that everyone was wearing life jackets. Though the weather was bad for the last two days, it is improving now and we have made a written appeal to the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre to continue the search operation aggressively,” Sher Singh said.

Notably, the Japanese Coast Guard received the distress signal of the vessel when it was about 280 km east of Philippines. Bulk carriers Densa Cobra and SM Samarinda rescued 11 and 5 crew members respectively. With the weather clearing out after two days, the search would be intensified, Shyam Singh’s family members echoed.
