Jaipur: Hotel development is in ‘larger public interest’

The decisions has been taken in accordance with recommendations made by Tourism department for promoting new investment in the sector.

The state government has included the establishment of tourism units in ‘larger public interest’ category for land use conversion. Thus, land use conversions for these will now be possible even against the set master development plan of the area. However, such use conversions in ‘larger public interest’ shall still be subject to approval at the state government level.

The decisions has been taken in accordance with recommendations made by Tourism department for promoting new investment in the sector. The urban development department to have decided in the favour has asked urban bodies to facilitate such conversions applications. “The decision has been taken after due discussions on proposals made by tourism department and Jodhpur Development Authority,” stated a senior officer at urban development department.  As the orders were released on Thursday, most of the hoteliers are still to study it in details. However, the defend the industry to be in ‘public interest’ and welcome any sort of assistance. “Tourism is a major employment generator and if the hoteliers are able to find affordable land, it indeed is going to help them in a competitive market,” says Randhir Singh Mandawa, general secretary of Indian Heritage Hotel Association.

The decision though has created speculations regarding conservation of the ecological areas, A large number of commercial units including hotels and restaurants with over Rs 1 crore investment are included among the tourism units. All these shall now find expanding space in such areas which were earlier suitable only for resort and farmhouse.

The decision will also circumvent the situation created following the high court order in the master development plan. As no conditions have been levied to ensure that the after the intended land use, the property is not used for other commercial purposes.

Amendment

  • The units have also been granted exemption from the condition to surrender 5% area for service utility.
  • The government has amended the Rajasthan Township Policy.
