A tragic incident occurred in the wee hours of Sunday wherein a fire outbreak resulted in the death of a man and his dog in Ambabari area of the city. The fire broke out on the first floor of the house wherein the man and dog were sleeping while the remaining family and the servant were sleeping on the ground floor. According to locals, when the fire broke out, the dog became alert and tried to drag his master to safety, however, could not do so as the man had already become unconscious due to smoke. Sadly, the dog also died on the side of his master due to asphyxiation.

According to the police, the incident occurred at plot number E-86 opposite Durga Park area of Ambabari. “The house is in name of one Sanjeev Kumar Ohlan who used to run an event management company with his wife Suman Raina. The couple had a son – Pakshit - and apart from the three-member family, a servant also used to live in the house. The family had kept a dog named Bruno,” officials said.

The incident occurred after 5 AM on Sunday. “On Saturday night, the family had dinner and Sanjeev retired to a room on the first floor of the house along with Bruno. Meanwhile, Suman and Pakshit were sleeping in a room on the ground floor while the servant – Jai Singh – had been given a room on the second floor of the house,” officials said.

Everyone was fast asleep when around 5 AM, a fire broke out in the room on the first floor. “Due to the presence of furniture and mattresses near the fire, the outbreak spread quickly to other parts of the room. As the smoke developed in the room, Sanjeev woke up as Bruno started barking. He tried to alert the family members about the fire and save himself, however, the smoke made him fall unconscious. Meanwhile, hearing Sanjeev’s wails, his wife woke up and raised an alarm on seeing the room engulfed with fire,” officials said.

Meanwhile, seeing that his master was not moving, Bruno held the man by the leg and tried to drag him to safety. However, due to the fire, the canine did not dare cross the room. He even barked several times and pawed at Sanjeev to wake him but to no avail.

“Hearing the wails of the family, Jai Singh came running from his room and saw the room. The locals also woke up by now and alerted the fire department and local police. Four fire tenders were pressed into service from VKI and Bani Park fire stations. The firefighters broke open the gates of the house and rescued Suman, Pakshit and Jai Singh. When the firefighters reached the room engulfed with fire, they found that Sanjeev had fallen dark due to the immense smoke. He was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead,” officials said.
