The city fire department gets chief after a gap of one and half year. The state government has appointed Jagdish Phulwariya as Chief Fire Officer at Jaipur Municipal Corporation. The post was vacant since the retirement of Dinesh Verma from in October 2016.

The municipal corporation has since been demanding appointment on the post and written twice to the state government on the issue. The need of the officer was also emphasised following major fire instances at the city in past few months including the Vidhyadhar Nagar fire tragedy, fire at Rose Marriage Garden, Mysore Marriage Garden, Kishanpole Bazar and VKI Chemical Factory. The fire tragedy at Vidhyadhar Nagar had claimed five lives and exposed ill-preparedness of the fire department.

More recently the district collector Siddharth Mahajan, also in charge of the District Disaster Management Cell had also expressed his displeasure with the working of the fire department. Meanwhile, assistant fire officer Jalaj Gasia, as an acting chief fire officer, made efforts to ensure the safety of state capital. Differences have emerged between the fire cell at JMC and district collector over fire safety at the IPL and thereafter over noncompliance on orders seeking a report on fire No Objection Certificate (NOC) issued to various coaching classes, restaurants and other commercial buildings at the city. As the new chief fire officer, Jagdish Phulwariya has previously served as an assistant fire officer.
