Doctors at a city based hospital conducted successful transcatheter double valve replacement without open heart surgery on a 64-year-old patient, claimed to be the first of its kind case in South East Asia.

Sudesh Sharma, a 64-year-old from Gurgaon, was showing symptoms of breathlessness, swelling of legs, abdominal discomfort, and loss of appetite and weight. Upon evaluating her case history, the team of doctors found that she was diabetic, had poor liver function, and most importantly, had undergone multiple cardiac procedure in the past. Sudesh had suffered from rheumatic heart disease, which had damaged one of her valve. In a surgery 9 years back, the damaged heart valve was replaced.

“She had undergone an open heart surgery in 2002 when a mitral heart valve was repaired, and again in 2009, the same valve was replaced. Now at the age of 64, when she had diabetes and poor liver function, the same mitral valve was leaking,” Dr Ravinder Singh Rao, Interventional Cardiologist at EHCC Hospital said. “Added to that, echocardiography showed that another tricuspid valve was also leaking. We decided to go for a sensitive and difficult procedure of transcatheter double valve replacement. This is actually the first case in South East Asia, when two heart valves were replaced without open heart surgery,” he added.

As per doctors, the case was challenging due to multiple reasons. Her mitral valve, which was inserted earlier, was leaking because the replaced valve had lived its age and deteriorated over time. Given her diabetic, age and other conditions, she would not have most likely survived another open heart surgery.

“The procedure was minimally invasive and did not involve any big cut or surgery. The mitral valve already had a surgically implanted valve. So we had to put a valve inside the valve that too without open heart surgery,” said Dr Rao.
