Cardiologists in a city-based hospital gave a new lease of life to a patient by performing the highly complex ‘Bentall procedure with hemi arch repair’.

The patient was suffering from abnormal enlargement of the Aorta (Aortic aneurysm). Aorta is the main blood vessel that supplies oxygenated blood to the body and any problem with the aorta can quickly become a serious and life-threatening medical emergency.

“Kanta Devi (name changed), a 44-year-old woman from Dausa was brought to us with complaints of severe and unexplained spells of body pain, nausea with lack of appetite. Multiple diagnostic tests revealed an aneurysm (abnormal enlargement) of the Aorta extending from the aortic root to the arch of aorta along with a malfunctioning valve,” Dr Ankit Mathur, senior Consultant, Cardiac Surgery at Narayana Hospital said.

“Extension of the aneurysm up-till the ‘aortic arch’ made the surgery even more complicated as blood vessels that supply blood to the brain originate from that portion,” he added.

As per doctors, Bentall Surgeries are performed in higher cardiac surgical centers around the world but Bentall surgery with hemi arch replacement is extremely rare with high mortality rates. Such surgeries require detailed surgical planning as the brain vessels are also involved.

“During the surgery, the core temperature of the body was progressively reduced to 18 to 20 degrees Celsius and the whole blood circulation in the body was stopped for around 30 minutes when the aneurysm in the ‘arch portion’ of the aorta is repaired. Minimal blood was only pumped to the brain via arm vessels to maintain neurological function, during the surgery,” said Dr Mathur.

The surgery took over 9 hours in which the entire diseased portion of the aorta including the valves, were removed and replaced with synthetic tube-like grafts. Blood vessels were then re-connected to help restore normal blood supply. The blood was slowly warmed, introduced into the body and the heart was re-started post the surgical repair.
