Jaipur: Debt-ridden farmer commits suicide

A 60-year-old farmer indentified as Revadilal Meghwal, a resident of Rehlai village on Tuesday evening committed suicide by consuming poisonous substance at his home. The farmer was rushed to Baran district government hospital where the doctors in critical condition referred him to MBS hospital in Kota. 

The farmer on Thursday morning around 7 o’clock succumbed to death during treatment at MBS hospital, head constable at Atru police station Suresh Chand told.  

The elder son of the deceased farmer in report to the police in the matter alleged that his father was running under heavy debt and was depressed over not getting fair price of his garlic yield, the purchase price of which is running very low in the market, the police personnel said. On the report, a case under section 174 of Cr.P.C. was lodged in the matter and further investigation is underway, he added.

The farmers’ organizations in Hadouti region that produces a huge amount of garlic crop every year, have staged a protest in recent days in Kota, Bundi, Jhalwar and Baran districts demanding a fair price of garlic crop. Notably, at least five to seven garlic cultivators last year in June and July had committed suicide in Hadouti region.
