Jaipur cops, villagers clash over illegal sand mining, 1 killed

Police and villagers clashed over illegal sand mining in Dholpur on Tuesday. One person was killed when police tried to apprehend the trolleys ferrying illegally mined sand from Chambal and irate villagers set the Jatoli police chowki under Nihalganj police station area on fire. They were demanding that a case of murder be filed against the police.

Police and villagers clashed over illegal sand mining in Dholpur on Tuesday. One person was killed when police tried to apprehend the trolleys ferrying illegally mined sand from Chambal and irate villagers set the Jatoli police chowki under Nihalganj police station area on fire. They were demanding that a case of murder be filed against the police.

Heavy police force has been deployed in the area to control the situation. Senior officers of the police and administration reached the spot to pacify the public. The villagers claim that the tractors were carrying cattle feed and the police had attacked them thereby causing the accident that killed one Bhairon Singh Gurjar of Bhambhroli village.  

“The persons were involved in illegal sand mining. The policemen deployed at the checkpost tried to halt the tractors that were used for ferrying the sand and they tried to escape. A tractor trolley overturned and one person got crushed under it. Meanwhile, some people came on motorcycles and burnt the chowki. The situation is now under control,” said SP Dholpur Rajesh Singh.

An FIR has been lodged against the accused policemen, allegations of the locals will be investigated,” said O P Saharan, SDM Dholpur.

Meanwhile, the relatives of the deceased and the local community leaders claim a different set of sequences, “Bhairon Singh was sitting on the mudguard of the tractor that had emptied karbi (cattle feed).

The police attacked the driver and tried to pull Bhairon Singh down and he was crushed under the wheel of the tractor and died,” said Sandeep Kasana, a relative of the deceased.

Two cases have been filed in the matter, one by the police for burning down their checkpost and the other by the relatives of the deceased against policemen. 

As per sources at the local hospital, that did not wish to be named, the body of the deceased was covered in sand.

  • Illegal sand mining continues unabated in the Chambal river area and police have intensified vigil. The locals have been demanding that the Jatoli chowki at be removed. Incidentally it was this very chowki that was burnt on Tuesday.
